Laser vision correction (LASIK and PRK) remains the industry standard for refractive surgery. And today, these procedures are safer than ever because of extensive research and technological advancements that allow the surgeon to plan and deliver a more precise and safe treatment to each individual eye.
More than half a million people in the U.S. improve their vision with LASIK or PRK every year. The majority of these patients had Traditional LASIK or PRK to correct their nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Recent innovations in technology have increased the precision of Custom wavefront-guided LASIK to create the most personal, individualized result. Custom LASIK achieves this by going beyond nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism to correct what is known as “higher order aberrations” (smaller optical imperfections of the cornea) more predictably.
The Bausch & Lomb Technolas Zyoptix System is the next step in Custom LASIK. It’s based on the principle that each eye is unique, with characteristics unlike anyone else’s. Each iris has individual patterns that are as unique as a fingerprint.
The Zyoptix System scans the iris and utilizes this image to “lock on” to the eye during the procedure. It will then actively track every movement, continually adjusting to ensure that each pulse is delivered to its intended location on the cornea, including rotational or twisting movements of the eye. It is the only laser in the U.S. capable of this rotational tracking; giving the added insurance that the patient is getting the most accurate procedure possible. Studies have shown Custom Zyoptix patients have significantly better vision after surgery. The quality of vision is better, astigmatism is corrected more fully, with a significant reduction in night vision glare, halos, ghosting and contrast issues as well as a reduction in retreatments necessary to achieve optimal visual acuity.
In addition, Bausch & Lomb is the only company that has taken its results to the FDA and received approval for its Advanced Nomogram. A nomogram is a set of rules, so to speak, that takes a set of known measurements and uses these to calculate future measurements. So if one takes a patient’s prescription, the laser will process those numbers through the Advanced Nomogram to help the surgeon come up with the most exact and appropriate treatment for that patient. This, combined with the wavefront guidance and along with the ACE tracking system, makes this the most advanced technology available and truly personalizes the procedure for each eye. FBN
