Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

As it navigates through a very complex world, the human body has to determine what is safe and what is not safe. Generally speaking, MCS refers to an unusually severe reaction to a low exposure of chemicals, pollutants and/or solvents. While the “average” person may have little to no reaction from the environmental substance, the individual who suffers from MCS reports:

  • Allergy-like reactions to both large and exceedingly small levels of irritant.
  • The problem is ongoing and not a “one time” event.
  • The same symptoms are reproducible with repeated exposure to the same irritant.
  • Multiple chemical or environmental agents can trigger symptoms.
  • Symptoms improve when exposure is removed.

 

Because the “average” person can tolerate moderate to low exposure to environmental chemicals with no adverse reaction, the diagnosis of MCS with conventional medical tests has proven difficult. If timed closely with exposure to the environmental substance, standard immune function tests may show abnormalities.
