Nathan Avery, M.D., was known as a physician who was compassionate,
upbeat and thoughtful—even as he dealt with some of the most
difficult and heart-wrenching cases. He was recognized for his clinical
and surgical expertise as well as his willingness to assist his colleagues,
going above and beyond expectations. He was respected for his
intuitive insight related to traumatic injuries and life-threatening
neurological conditions. Dr. Avery specialized in adult and pediatric
neurosurgery, including trauma cases. He became a member of the
FMC medical staff in 2001. Dr. Avery was instrumental in the
development and opening of FMC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
As an additional recognition of his commitment to the patients, the
hospital and the community, the annual award is being renamed this
year in honor of Dr. Avery. It will now be known as the Nathan Avery
Physician of the Year award.
