Cameron Trading Post supporting travelers for 110 years.
The Founding Story
Established in 1916, the trading post offers a vast variety of Native American arts and crafts, including rugs, pottery, blankets, jewelry, dolls, baskets and clothing. Brothers Hubert and C.D. Richardson claimed 112 acres on the south side of the Little Colorado River and built a shack to serve as a trading post. At first, only locals came to barter their wool, blankets and livestock for dry goods.
Through the years, the business has remained in the family. Additions have included a post office, gallery, restaurant and hotel – all featuring red rock exteriors. Joe Atkinson, the grandnephew of C.D. Richardson, purchased the business in 1978.
Top Achievements
The family’s top achievement was establishing the trading post as a trustworthy, fair and productive member of the community, said Atkinson. “As visitors began to throng to the area to experience the beauty, art and culture here, we were able to incorporate these new guests successfully into our local trading business.”
Another achievement was creating an enterprise that benefits the business and the community.
Core Values
“Our staff are our family, literally as well as figuratively,” he said. “This company takes care of us in so many ways, and we take care of our company!”
Shifts Impacting the Business
“What we have been for over 100 years still works for us today. We do grow and improve each year. All of this company’s profits are invested in our store and its family of staff.”
Greatest Challenges
“If it’s not fire, flood or drought, then it’s economic downturns, high fuel prices or a global pandemic. So far, we have been thrown no curveball we couldn’t still hit out of the park!”
Looking Ahead
“My hope is that Cameron Trading Post will continue to thrive, continue to act as a springboard for members of our community, continue to nourish and strengthen us all, and continue to be a haven and a harbor for all who seek a glimpse into the heart and culture of Grand Canyon country.”
The Reason for Long-Term Success
“We go above and beyond to care for our customers’ needs and to keep our pricing fair,” said Atkinson. “We keep up with the times but never skimp and are always mindful of our old trading post hospitality and ambience.” FBN
