Wednesday, April 9 is Arizona Gives Day, a 24-hour online giving marathon at azgives.org. Arizona Gives Day encourages individuals to join forces on a single day to support the vital nonprofit organizations that make our communities strong, thriving places to live. Similar statewide giving days occur across the nation.
Northern Arizona donors wishing to support local organizations will have their choice of 68 Flagstaff and northern Arizona nonprofits that have signed up to participate.
“That’s almost double the number from last year,” said Pats Shriver, Regional Manager for the Flagstaff Community Foundation. An affiliate of the Arizona Community Foundation, FCF is participating in the effort by helping to get the word out about Arizona Gives Day. The Arizona Community Foundation provides funding and support to help the event be successful.
“This is a way to bring attention and much-needed funding to Flagstaff’s nonprofit organizations,” said Geoffrey Barnard, co-chair of the Flagstaff Community Foundation’s Advisory Board. “Arizona Gives Day is a day to remember and celebrate the important work of these vital organizations in making our communities better places to live for all residents. Making an online contribution on Arizona Gives Day is the least we can do to support these critical services.”
The 68 local organizations registered for Arizona Gives Day offer programs in the visual and performing arts; science; education; music; employment, housing and emergency
services; environmental and conservation; as well as support for Flagstaff visitor attractions and Native American organizations.
“This is an opportunity for individuals to directly support their favorite local organizations along with their neighbors and fellow Arizonans. It’s fun, it’s easy, it’s secure, and every contribution makes a huge difference,” said Barnard.
Between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on April 9, 2014, donors can go to azgives.org, click on the names of the nonprofit organizations they care about, and make tax-deductible donations. Cash prizes will be awarded to nonprofit organizations with the most individual donors and the most dollars raised, with a special category just for small nonprofits.
Last year’s Arizona Gives Day raised more than $1 million statewide, with more than $30,000 going to nonprofits in northern Arizona. Notable local success stories included the Master Chorale of Flagstaff that exceeded a matching grant fund-raising goal. And the Northern Arizona Pioneers’ Historical Society received a prize for the second highest number of donors among organizations of its size.
