The Coconino County Public Health Services District continues to see a high number of influenza cases with 407 cases reported as of Feb. 2, which is significantly higher than the seven cases reported this time last year.
Public health officials have reported “widespread” flu activity statewide – the highest category. Two children died of flu-related causes recently in Yavapai and Navajo Counties. The deaths were the first in the state during the 2012-2013 flu season. No children have died from the flu in Coconino County this season.
In Coconino County, the flu rate is more than twice of that reported by the state for 0-4 and 50-64-year-olds. Among school-aged children 5-18 and 19-49-year-olds, the County’s flu rate is three times higher, whereas the rate of confirmed cases among those 65 and older is at state levels.
“Coconino County residents should take heed of our region’s higher flu rates and obtain a flu shot,” said Kimbal Babcock, County Public Health Services District (CCPHSD) interim health chief. “Given that flu activity can continue into late spring, getting a flu shot will not only protect you but will help protect others.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone older than 6 months old and those at a particularly high-risk of becoming ill to get a flu shot including:
• Pregnant women.
• Children younger than 5 years old.
• Adults age 65 or older.
• Those with chronic medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.
• People living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
• Those that care for individuals at high-risk, including health care and day care workers.
Many locations such as healthcare providers, supermarkets and pharmacies offer low-cost flu vaccines. Individuals can also get a flu shot at the CCPHSD Clinic, 2625 N. King Street in Flagstaff.
The cost for a flu shot at a CCPHSD Clinic is $25 for adults and $15 for children 18 years and younger. As a courtesy, the Health District will bill your insurance company, but those seeking a vaccination should check with their insurance provider to determine if they are covered. No one will be denied service due to inability to pay.
In addition to getting a flu shot, practicing good habits will help people maintain proper health. These simple actions can stop the spread of germs and help protect you and others from getting sick:
• Wash your hands frequently during the flu season.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and wash your hands afterwards. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve.
• Stay home when you are sick.
