The Slide Fire is 55% contained today, and has burned more than 21,000 acres.
The evacuation order for residents of Oak Creek Canyon has been lifted, and people are being allowed to return to their homes.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office lifted its pre-evacuation warning for residents impacted by the Slide Fire in Kachina Village and Forest Highlands subdivisions south of Flagstaff.
Mandatory evacuations remain in place in Oak Creek Canyon from Slide Rock State Park to Sterling Springs Hatchery.
The decision to lift the pre-evacuation notice is based on discussions with the Slide Fire Incident Command Team; progress made to date on combatting the fire and near-term forecast weather conditions.
The pre-evacuation warning was issued last Wednesday and asked residents to prepare for possible evacuation.
The public is asked to monitor fire conditions and updates on the fire at the County’s webpage at www.coconino.az.gov and its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
Residents countywide are reminded to register their cellphone number with the County’s CodeRED emergency notification system at www.coconino.az.gov/emergency to be warned if/when an emergency strikes in their area.
