Feb. 3. 6:00-7:30 p.m. at NAU’s Cline Library Auditorium. Data Driven Discoveries in Science – The Fourth Paradigm.
With focus on innovation and discovery, NAU is making a major investment in Informatics. New companies and jobs in all disciplines will be developed from the discovery and innovation informatics creates.
Join Dr. Alex Szalay, PhD to learn about the role of Big Data in science.
Dr. Szalay, Director of the Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science – The Johns Hopkins University, will speak about the role of Big Data in science. The data being collected by scientific research is expanding exponentially and science is moving increasingly from hypothesis-driven to data-driven discoveries. This transition is leading to a 4th paradigm in science research. Drawing on a range of examples, and especially from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Dr. Szalay will identify patterns of changes in scientific research as well as sociological and educational implications of these changes.
