Locally-owned KickStand Kafé is remodeling and expanding its location on Humphreys Street in Flagstaff. Construction started at the beginning of July. The project is expected to be completed by October, but the coffee shop will remain open throughout the renovation process.
Temporary walls currently shield customers from construction of a new entry and patio on the north side of the building. The renovation also includes an additional drive-thru window near the front of the south side of the building for more convenient pick-up.
“This is the first phase of three possible building phases,” said one of KickStand’s three partners, Guillermo Cortes. “We want to improve the north side of the building and make it more inviting for our customers with a new door and windows. We’ll add pavers for a side patio that will increase outdoor space. But the main reason for the improvements is for a more efficient drive-thru.”
Cortes, along with partner Wendell Johnson, launched the business in 2009 in the building that was originally a drive-thru dry cleaner.
“The new pick-up window in the front will make for more efficient cueing,” explained Annie Tentindo, the café manager, and recently-elected third KickStand partner. “We’re also adding another espresso machine that will be dedicated to the drive thru. We’ll be able to move a lot more quickly.”
The new barista bar on the Humphreys Street side of the building will also cater to walk-ups.
The locally-owned KickStand Kafé continues to grow even as out-of-town coffeehouses and national franchises have opened in Flagstaff in recent years. “Our success is due to our baristas,” said Cortes. “Many have been with us for years. Their attitudes and personalities contribute to our success.”
“We focus on moving things fast, while at the same time projecting a feeling of welcome, so customers don’t feel rushed,” added Tentindo. Both also point to their location, near Flagstaff Medical Center and Flagstaff High School, as another key to their success. And with the building and signage facing Humphreys Street, the location also draws tourists on their way to the Grand Canyon or Snowbowl.
“The Europeans recognize the illy brand,” said Cortes with a smile. KickStand serves the celebrated Italian espresso coffee, illy® caffé, and also Single Speed Coffee by another local company, Single Speed Coffee Roasters.
“We’re unique in that we’re not just a drive-thru,” said Cortes. “Customers will find the best of both worlds – a drive-thru and space to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee or good conversation.”
Renovation to the interior will enhance the space with a new fireplace and additional light from the new windows. “We will continue displaying local artists’ work and participate again in First Friday Art Walks once the innovations are done,” said Tentindo.
Stilley-Tulloss Design Build Group is doing the Phase I construction work. There are no dates set for the possible next two phases. “Phase II would include a kitchen and additional bathroom,” explained Cortes emphasizing that the plan was not to become a restaurant, but the kitchen would enable KickStand to offer customers additional grab and go options. “Phase III is the Dream Phase,” revealed Cortes. “The dream is to create a deck and mezzanine level with views of the peaks.”
