Willow Bend Environmental Education Center is hosting a presentation by two local entrepreneurs Jonathan Netzky and Kevin Ordean. In partnership with the Coconino County Sustainable Building Program the presentation is on November 7th at 5:30 PM at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center (703 East Sawmill Rd.) Come gather ideas for a more sustainable holiday celebration and feast utilizing local resources whether you’re the host, chef or gardener. We’ll have samples of turkey raised in Chino Valley at Ridgeview Farms and smoked by the local restaurant Satchmo’s.
Jonathan Netzky moved Local Alternative Inc. to Flagstaff in 2009 as a catering business that specialized in locally produced food. Having invented and distributed the Flagstaff-famous Netzky burger, Jonathan recently re-branded the product as the Tepa Burger™. The recipe remains local using AZ indigenous Tepary Beans, Paulden and Leupp grown Fire-Roasted Sugar Chiles and ever increasing quantities of Flagstaff grown Kale. Building on the theme of the upcoming talk at Willow Bend, Netzky explains that “knowing where our food comes from can bring integrity to our food supply just as purveying from local farms or growing one’s own can bring accountability to it.”
Kevin Ordean is the co-founder of Roots Composting – an employee owned company working to revolutionize the waste-stream in Flagstaff and elsewhere in northern Arizona. He says that their goal is “to provide the Flagstaff community with a high quality source of local, bulk compost to both extend landfill life and support regional agriculture, while shifting thought and behavior around the concept of ‘waste’.”
Ordean and Netzky will co-present the talk entitled “Localize Your Holiday Food Supply” which will feature discussion on the opportunities and challenges of purveying or growing local food specifically for the holiday season.
This event is Part 2 of a free Sustainability Series hosted monthly at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center. The series is presented in partnership with Willow Bend and the Coconino County Sustainable Building Program and is sponsored by Plug and Play Solar Kits.
The goal of the Sustainability Series at Willow Bend is to provide the northern Arizona community with a great opportunity to learn from local experts on sustainability, encompassing Willow Bend’s building and practices as models for teaching.
