City of Flagstaff officials are making sandbags available for people to fill up, and sandbags remain available at the Silver Saddle store in Doney Park. Heavy summer rains have saturated the ground and caused localized flooding. Many homeowners throughout the region are reporting flooding and mud in homes.
In Flagstaff this afternoon, heavy rain and an over-full culvert in east Flagstaff caused substantial flooding and stopped traffic for about 20 minutes on Route 66 near Fanning. One witness reported water spanned 100 feet wide and in places was four feet deep. Emergency services workers stayed at the scene, preventing cars from driving into the flooded roadway.
The National Weather Service says between one and two inches of rain fell in a short period of time in parts of Northern Arizona which contributed to the flooding. The unstable weather pattern affecting the region is expected to remain for the next few days, with the possibility of a slightly drier period at the beginning of the next workweek.
Sandbags in Flagstaff are available at Fire Station Two at Route 66 and Ponderosa Parkway.
