With 2-3 inches of fresh snow yesterday and more expected next week, the Nordic Center, 15 miles north of Flagstaff at 8,000-feet elevation, is preparing for a big winter and a Thanksgiving Day opening. “We’re ready to outfit recreationists with cross-country skis, skate skis and snowshoes to get everyone outdoors,” said Manager Wendell Johnson.
The ski area’s four cabins and eight yurts will be open for day use and overnight glamping starting Wednesday, Nov. 25. With or without snow, fat tire bikes will be available to rent on Thursday, Nov. 26 and the first trailside Friday Night Bonfire of the season is scheduled for 3 – 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27. Meantime, the Nordic Center has added another snowcat to help keep the 25 miles of trails groomed.
Meteorologists say a very strong El Niño is brewing and forecast to continue through fall and winter. “It is on track to become one of the strongest El Niños on record,” says National Weather Service Flagstaff Meteorologist in Charge Brian A. Klimowski, Ph.D. “We’re calling for an 85 – 90 percent chance for normal or above normal precipitation across Northern Arizona.”
