Theatrikos Theatre Company has long played a leading role in Flagstaff’s arts scene.
The Founding Story
“In 1972, Doris Harper-White and a group of her friends met in the basement of the Weatherford Hotel with the goal to create a vibrant, inclusive space where local talent could flourish and the performing arts could thrive,” said Executive Director Jeremy Blunt.
The company found a permanent home in 1989 in a historic 1920s-era building on West Cherry Avenue that had been the Elks Lodge and later Flagstaff’s first library. It was renamed the Doris Harper-White Playhouse in 2002.
“Doris Harper-White spearheaded the organization until her passing,” Blunt said. “She was the one who really had that vision and leadership to sustain it.”
Top Achievements
From a small community effort to a cornerstone of Flagstaff’s arts scene, Theatrikos has sustained continuous operation for decades, serving generations of audiences and artists. Blunt said, “A major milestone was securing and transforming the Doris Harper-White Playhouse into a dedicated theatre home,” which provided stability and a recognized venue.
Core Values
Inclusivity, quality, care and fun are core values. “We are committed to inclusivity, diversity, and civility. We develop and draw from our local talent and have a place for all who want to be involved in community theatre.”
Through words and actions, the organization also strives to demonstrate how it values celebrates, encourages and supports employees, volunteers, patrons, donors and friends, Blunt said, adding, “We have fun!”
Shifts Impacting the Organization
The company has expanded education into year-round offerings and added a dedicated education studio up Humphreys Street. Another important shift has been the move toward paying artists.
Greatest Challenges
Inflation has increased costs for utilities, staffing and set building, while grants remain unpredictable. “Together, these factors create a challenging financial environment, requiring us to balance fiscal responsibility with our commitment to artistic excellence and community access.”
Looking Ahead
“Our vision for the next 40 years is to become the premier theatre company in Northern Arizona.”
The Reason for Long-Term Success
“The main reason Theatrikos Theatre Company has succeeded for decades is the strength of its people, supported by a clear vision and consistent leadership,” said Blunt. “Our longevity is rooted in strong community support and a deeply engaged base of volunteers who are committed to the organization’s mission.” FBN
