Preventing Second Strokes
Strokes are often associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and diabetes, but researchers and doctors have been concerned about the number of young, healthy people who are having strokes. In some cases, these are caused by blood clots traveling through a hole in the heart that block blood flow to the brain.
The Medical Products Division of W. L. Gore & Associates, located in Flagstaff, has developed a device to close the hole that has a 77 percent better success rate than other preventative methods – like taking baby aspirin – to keep second strokes from happening in these stroke survivors.
Meet Gore Associate Jake Goble who heads up the team that created the newly FDA approved game-changing GORE® CARDIOFORM Septal Occluder and Flagstaff interventional cardiologist Dr. David Leder of Mountain Heart, who is implanting the device in local stroke patients.
