Dialing for Poetry

April 11, 2016 By FBN

There is really no way to describe how the idea for a public art project came to the creative mind of Elizabeth Hellstern. “I don’t know. It just came out of the blue,” she said. Hellstern, a Flagstaff writer, was riding along with her partner when she suddenly said to him, “Wouldn’t it be nice if people could go into a telephone booth, dial a number and hear a poem?” Her partner, a sculptor, thought it was a great idea. Grants from the Flagstaff Beautification and Public … [Read more...] about Dialing for Poetry

A Family Business of Connections

March 14, 2012 By Patty McCormac

Mike Merrill of CommSpeed was born to be in the family business. “I grew up in large storage yards with huge spools of cable and huge communication dishes. I would have great games of hide-and-go-seek with my cousins,” he said. But, out of a large number of cousins, he is the only one to have picked up the torch for the business started by Bruce Merrill, Mike’s grandfather. “He was a bonafied pioneer in the telecom industry. He absolutely loved the business. He lived it. Breathed it. … [Read more...] about A Family Business of Connections

Work Where You Want, When You Want

January 26, 2012 By techsuperadmin

The last decade has seen an explosion in technologies that make it possible, even easy, for knowledge workers to get things done away from the office. This “Always On” capability has been a bit of a mixed blessing – no longer can we just close our office doors for the night and be away from work. It’s hard to do that when your email chirps the phone in your pocket 24x7 but it also means we have a lot more flexibility in where (and when) we choose to get things done. Case in point: I’m using a … [Read more...] about Work Where You Want, When You Want

Understanding and Incorporating QR Codes

August 10, 2011 By techsuperadmin

As I look around at the many advertisements that surround us, I have noticed more and more crazy little barcodes as part of the advertisement. These barcode images resemble a square-like maze. What are these codes? These are called EZcodes or QR (Quick Response) codes. They are a two-dimensional barcode created and designed to be scanned horizontally or vertically by smartphone cameras. When you scan these images, a video will play, a webpage will load, a mobile app will download or a map and … [Read more...] about Understanding and Incorporating QR Codes

Northern Arizonans Compare AT&T and Verizon for the iPhone

February 23, 2011 By Theresa Bierer

Leslie Kemp doesn't have much longer to wait before she'll have an iPhone in hand. The Sedona resident works at NAU and says Verizon has the best coverage in Northern Arizona. Kemp, who uses a cell phone for business and personal calls, will soon be able to access the Internet from her smartphone. "I’m excited to have an iPhone because it relies on the software rather than the hardware to stay up to date. If something new comes out, I can just download a new app. I don’t have to upgrade in a … [Read more...] about Northern Arizonans Compare AT&T and Verizon for the iPhone
