This is a time of extreme stress for many people. In the news, every day for months, there’s the COVID-19 virus, illness, death, economic and financial collapse, social and political unrest, and isolation. On a day-to-day basis, almost everyone’s life has been disrupted. Many worries are about the future, things that haven’t happened yet. Some things that are happening now are not having an effect in the moment.
For some people, if they can’t see “it,” it could be anywhere and everywhere. Some people act with an overabundance of caution. Some people are paralyzed with fear and become virtual prisoners in their own homes. The evidence is, with proper precautions, it can be safe to carefully leave the house and do what needs to be done to have a life. The techniques mentioned last month can be helpful.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are people who are living as though there is no danger from the COVID-19 virus. They may believe it is no worse than the flu, or perhaps it doesn’t even exist; it’s part of a hoax.
For those people, it might be helpful to remember that there are many things that are undetectable by human senses, yet that can be dangerous or even deadly.
Skin cancer can be caused by invisible ultraviolet rays. Other cancers can be caused by carcinogens in food, drink, smoke, the environment and other forms of radiation.
Severe acne, strep throat, wound infections, Lyme disease, ulcers, tetanus, anthrax, cholera, plague, some STDs, some types of pneumonia, flesh-eating diseases, leprosy, tuberculosis, cavities and common food poisoning are caused by bacteria.
Fungal infections include athlete’s foot, yeast infections, ringworm, some types of pneumonia and valley fever.
Viruses cause herpes, shingles, colds, flu, SARs, hepatitis, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, polio, rabies, Ebola, Hanta fever, some types of pneumonia, some types of STDs, HIV and COVID-19.
Even molecules in the air, like carbon monoxide, in high enough concentrations, can sicken or kill.
There are vaccines and/or effective treatments for some of the items listed. For some people and causes, time cures. For other causes and people, there is only death.
What all of the causes have in common, even if they can’t be seen, is that they can be prevented.
Sometimes, an abundance of caution and common sense is all it takes to be safe – for yourself and others.
To help let go of stress and not worry about the future, here are a few techniques:
Limit consumption of news that is not helpful.
Limit exposure to negative social media.
Communicate with others as much and as safely as possible.
Keep conversations positive.
Focus on being in the moment.
At least occasionally, practice closing the eyes, focusing on the breath while breathing in and out. Imagine breathing in fresh, clear, calming, peaceful air, then breathing out stress like dirty smoke. FBN
