Established in 1969, The Guidance Center (TGC) is a Community Mental Health Center that offers a full range of Behavioral Health programs and services for children, adolescents, adults and families. Services are tailored to meet individual and family needs.
What is Mental Illness?
A mental illness is a combination of symptoms that leads to difficulties with emotion and behavior that disrupt the ability to relate to others and function daily. One in four adults are affected by mental illness every year and 20 percent of children receive mental health care. Recovery does happen and The Guidance Center partners with clients through their process of recovery.
The Guidance Center has several departments that provide a full spectrum of behavior health treatment.
TGC’s Child and Family Services offers a full continuum of care for children and adolescents experiencing problems related to behavior, depression, family difficulties, substance abuse, sexual abuse, hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders. Children and families can access services such as: therapy, family support groups, living skills, summer activities and group skills programs. Therapists help children and families identify strengths they can use to best address challenges they face.
The Adult Services department offers services for adults with general mental health issues as well as those with serious mental illnesses. Adult Services offers a variety of options, including individual counseling, peer support, case management, group therapy, vocational counseling and housing assistance.
The Psychiatric Acute Care Unit is a 16-bed psychiatric hospital. This unit offers support for adults who are in need of evaluation, medication stabilization, and/or emergency psychiatric care, including involuntary hospitalization. A highly qualified and compassionate staff offers 24-hour care in a safe, structured environment. The Guidance Center employees provide medication monitoring as well as educational and activity groups.
Crisis Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and during business hours.
Substance Abuse help is available for individuals and families seeking education, intervention, and/or treatment for drug or alcohol abuse problems. TGC provides a full range of services for those struggling with substance abuse including stabilization, residential rehabilitation, outpatient treatment, individual and group counseling, and family therapy.
In addition, The Guidance Center has partnered with North Country HealthCare to offer HealthCare Connect, a primary health care clinic that closes the gap between mental health and primary care. Easy access to primary health care on site is provided at The Guidance Center. FBN
