The Arizona Air National Guard’s 161st Air Refueling Wing will support local utility companies with power restoration efforts in areas on the East Coast affected by Hurricane Sandy. The 161st ARW will facilitate the loading and transportation of Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service line crews, support staff and required vehicles in efforts to restore power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
“Americans come together in times like this,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “I’m proud that our Arizona National Guard is assisting in this critical emergency-response mission, and that SRP and APS are sending much-needed equipment and personnel to help return power to the East Coast. The State of Arizona stands ready to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy in any way possible.”
The Guardsmen from the 161st have established 24/7 operations to support over 20 Air Force planes that are expected to fly in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to transport personnel, vehicles and equipment for this mission.
“The Arizona National Guard remains ready to respond to disaster relief efforts wherever they occur. Whether it happens in Arizona or on the East Coast, we remain true to our motto – ‘Always Ready, Always There,’ ” said Major General Hugo E. Salazar, Adjutant General of the Arizona National Guard.
