Flagstaff Fire Dept. responded to two separate fires this weekend. Yesterday, at about 10:45a.m., FFD responded to a report of a fire in the kitchen of Louies Chicken Shack on East Rt. 66. First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the restaurant and quickly extinguished a fire burning in one of the deep fryers in the kitchen.
The deep fryer had recently been installed and it appears that the heating element of the fryer was not working properly causing the grease to ignite after reaching its ignition temperature. Minimal damage was sustained to the restaurant and nobody was injured during the fire.
At approx. 10:30 last night, FFD responded to the 1200 block of N. Edgewood St. for a report of a fire in the garage of the residence. First arriving crews found fire and heavy smoke coming from the garage area and heavy smoke conditions inside of the residence.
The fire had burned through a wall of the garage and extended into the attic of the residence. Crews were able to extinguish the fire after exposing the attic from an exterior wall from the roof.
One occupant of the residence was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for burns sustained to his hand and face. This fire was caused by improper storage of ashes from the fireplace. No injuries were sustained to FFD personnel.
The FFD would like to remind the community to store ashes in a metal container and to use water on the ashes before discarding.
