Flagstaff’s two Denny’s restaurants will join the Phoenix stores for the fight against childhood cancer by partnering with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a national not-for-profit dedicated to raising funds for research to develop new, improved treatments for pediatric cancer, the number one cause of death by disease in children in the U.S.
Denny’s fourth annual Cookies for Kids’ Cancer fundraising campaign takes place throughout June with the goal of raising $350,000 through the sale of paper “cookies,” which serve as a symbol of support for the non-profit organization. Diners can purchase paper cookies for $1, $5, $10 or a donation of their choice and sign their name, the name of a loved one or a personalized message on each paper cookie before it takes a place of pride on the walls of participating diners.
Since 2011, Denny’s has raised nearly $250,000 for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, fully funding two pediatric cancer research grants. This year, Denny’s in Phoenix are part of a larger effort spanning 12 states and 180 Denny’s restaurants raising funds for the cause.
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer was founded in 2008 by the mother of a young boy named Liam who was diagnosed with cancer as a toddler. Sadly, Liam lost his battle with the disease in 2011 at the age of six. The organization generates the majority of its funds each year through grassroots events like bake sales held across the country.
“Liam’s story is one that touches us all, and we want to do everything we can to increase support for and awareness of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer,” said Glenn Beattie, franchisee of select participating Denny’s restaurants. “Through our continued partnership, Denny’s hopes to help the organization raise funds needed to make a big difference in the lives of these brave children.”
Pediatric cancer claims the lives of more children annually than any other disease – more than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and AIDS combined. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides annual research grants to five of the nation’s leading pediatric cancer centers to help advance the development of less toxic, more effective treatments for children battling cancer.
