Traditional Roofing was started about a decade ago by Matt Behmer. Despite challenges related to the recession, Behmer’s company has experienced success in part because of a strong work ethic. Traditional Roofing has also been supported by local contractors who are committed to using Flagstaff businesses. Traditional Roofing has been working on some high profile projects recently (including the Amtrak Train Station’s re-roofing) and the company has also been selected to work on a public private partnership at NAU. Behmer spoke with FBN for this Web Exclusive.
What is the history of Traditional Roofing?
Matt I’m a fourth generation roofer. My great grandfather (RW “Carty” Behmer) started roofing in the early 1940’s in Los Angeles, CA. I started Traditional Roofing in 2003 out of the back of my truck and with very little money. My grandfather used to say — “if you don’t know your roof…know your roofer”, and I’ve adopted that as my motto.
What are some of the business philosophies of the company?
My dad instilled in me to maintain solid credit and employ only the best help. As simple as that sounds, it has allowed TR to forge very strong relationships with our vendors and our employees. At a time when most vendors are limiting credit, ours has increased.
What are some projects you’ve done during the past decade?
-Drury Inn Hotel at NAU
-Marriot Hotel
-Aspen Place at the Sawmill
-Flagstaff High School Remodel / Re-Roof
-Lumberyard Bar & Grill
-Flagstaff Visitors Center / AMTRAK Station Re-Roof
How has the company endured the recession?
It’s tough – Loyal employees, customers, & vendors. We’ve just tried to focus on solid projects and commit ourselves 100%. Importantly, there are a few local General Contractors that have contributed largely to our workload — namely, WESPAC Construction, Builders Showcase, and Loven Contracting to name a few. These guys work hard to keep the work local and put out quality projects. Additionally, my material supplier A.L.L. Roofing Supply (Jerry Lessel & Ryan Straus) have been very supportive since the inception of my company.
What are some of your hopes for Traditional Roofing in the future.
Just keep growing and successfully completing quality, high
profile projects. Currently, we are in the running on Twin Arrows Casino and the NAU Privatized Housing / Apartment Project. We are excited about these two jobs as they will carry us into 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2012.
