Kevin Treadway has been selected as the next Chief of Police of the Flagstaff Police Department. City Manager Kevin Burke and Deputy City Manager Josh Copley announced their selection this afternoon at an all staff/officer meeting at the Law Enforcement Administrative Facility.
During his announcement, Burke said that Treadway is the best for this job. “Kevin has great integrity, a ridiculous work ethic, outstanding customer service, great analytical and strategic mind, and equally important, the ability to receive criticism and coaching, analyze it, and make adjustments. This is something you can’t train. Either it is part of the personality or it isn’t. This is another reason I chose Kevin”, Burke said.
The City held an extensive national search for the Chief of Police position. Fifty-two (52) applications were received, phone interviews were conducted with 15 candidates, 5 individuals participated in in-person interviews, which narrowed the search down to 2 finalist: Kevin Treadway and Blair Ulring, former Stockton California Chief of Police.
Treadway and Ulring consistently performed well throughout eight (8) different assessment centers involving community members, police personnel, and various managers. All told, well over 100 people provided input into the Chief of Police selection process.
Both were looked at in great detail including another interview regarding the feedback received during the assessment process and additional reference checks.
In announcing the selection of Treadway, City Manager Burke noted that this was not a decision against Blair – it was a decision for Treadway. He added that he thought some might speculate that letters or news articles might scare the City away from Ulring. “Nothing is further from the truth. He is solid and would be my pick any day of the week that didn’t have Kevin Treadway standing in front of him”, Burke told the Department.
Treadway has been serving as the Acting Chief of Police since October, 2011 following the untimely death of Chief Brent Cooper.
