There are so many ways to explore our big world! Some people like to explore on their own, without any plans or accommodations booked; some like the convenience of a tour or a cruise. So what is the best way to travel? This totally depends on each person’s personality and budget.
One of the most popular ways to see Europe is by train. But this also means schlepping bags, dealing with language barriers, finding the correct train in crowded train stations and having to be prepared to deal with inconveniences, such as train delays or strikes. For some travelers, this is part of the experience and they thrive on it; for others, this could be stressful and take all the fun out of traveling.
While the perception still exists that a “tour” means being hoarded from museum to museum with little flexibility, I’m happy to report that escorted tours have evolved! Now, you have the options of small groups – from 16 to 20 people – and you can also have access to places that you cannot visit by yourself, such as a private visit of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel after hours. If you have been to Rome, you know how special that experience would be.
Would you enjoy a home-hosted meal in Tuscany? Or learning calligraphy and origami while having tea in a private home in Kyoto, Japan? Cuddling a baby panda at China’s Chengdu Breeding Center? There are so many options!
Many tours cater to baby boomers, many of whom like to be active and love behind-the-scenes access combined with the flexibility to explore on their own. Other tours focus on generational travel, where grandparents, parents and children can bond while exploring the world. If touring museums isn’t your thing, how about whitewater rafting in the Austrian Alps?
For 18- to 35-year-olds, traveling with Contiki is the best way to see the world. The travel company’s tours include must-see sights and activities, such as riding a camel in Australia or hiking the Inca trail. It is a great graduation gift and parents will always know where they will be and that they are taken care of.
One wonderful alternative to a tour is a river cruise. You will find a variety of boats and itineraries in Europe, Russia and Asia. Such a cruise combines the convenience of not having to pack and unpack with the flexibility to explore on your own. Excursions are included, but you can just as easily strike off on your own with one of the bicycles that are provided for free.
Or, you could travel to France and Italy on a yacht, where part of the proceeds are donated to our local Shadows Foundation! This unique voyage travels from Monte Carlo to Rome from Sept. 7-17, 2013, visiting small ports such as Sardinia and Gaieta and is escorted by actor Rick Ravanello. (Please contact us for more information.)
There’s a whole world out there – and whether you join a tour, take a cruise or explore on your own, the options (and the destinations) are boundless! FBN
