Logging operations are scheduled to begin this week on the Horse Pine Stewardship Contract on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest near the Sherwood Forest Estates subdivision.
The purpose of the logging operations, which were authorized under the Frenchy Environmental Assessment, is to reduce the risk of high-intensity wildfire and to improve forest health, understory production and wildlife habitat.
The areas to be logged are located west of Forest Road 25, east of Forest Road 141 and south of Forest Road 102. These same forest roads will be used by logging trucks to access the area.
Logging activities will include the mechanized felling and removal of designated trees, piling of slash, and roadwork to facilitate log hauling. These operations are expected to continue through September.
Due to the safety hazards posed by tree felling, heavy equipment operations and log truck traffic, forest managers advise visitors to avoid recreating in the area and to stay clear of log decks, as they may shift unexpectedly.
