Mountain Heart Health Services has partnered with the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs. For the past 35 years the American Heart Association has been delivering heart healthy activities, education and programming to thousands of students in the Flagstaff Unified School District. In the past several weeks Mountain Heart and its community partners have raised approximately $20,000 in support of these programs. Community partners supporting this effort are Flagstaff Family Care, ZOLL, Little America, Northern Arizona Orthopaedics, Massage Envy, Benefit Financial Strategies, Arizona Arrhythmia Consultants, American Life Insurance Company, and many more!
“Heart Disease is the leading cause of adult death in the nation. Joining forces with the American Heart Association raises local awareness of how to decrease risks of developing heart disease,” Michael Zervas, Mountain Heart Managing Partner said. “We are grateful to have the support of our community partners to help us in this endeavor.” Mountain Heart and partners plan to hold a heart focused community healthfair on May 3, 2014 to celebrate the children’s success in the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs including an awards ceremony with local dignitaries.
The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn’t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese. “By including physical activity into their daily routines, children can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart disease,” said Dr. Kent Winkler, Medical Director of Mountain Heart Cardiology. “By raising money through Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart programs, we are preventing heart disease and obesity in the next generation.” With the continued support of the community, Mountain Heart hopes to make this an annual celebration.
Mountain Heart is currently seeking sponsors for the May 3, 2014 community health fair, raffle prize donations as well as volunteers. All donations are tax deductible and should be made payable to the American Heart Association, to continue to fund lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs for our youth.
