Estranged brothers with different views of what to do with their father’s ashes. A veteran tow-truck driver and a green police officer on the scene of a fatal wreck. A daughter who becomes the gatekeeper to her dating mother.
These scenes and four others will take the stage at the end of this month, as the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase has announced the winners of its 10-minute short playwriting contest. Seven final plays were selected out of more than 40 plays from around the community and the country.
The plays will be performed as dramatic readings at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, and Saturday, Aug. 31, at Theatrikos Theatre Company’s Doris Harper White Community Playhouse. Tickets are $5.
The Friday event concludes with an opening night reception and the Saturday peformance will be followed by a question-and-answer session with attending playwrights and directors.
The winning plays are “The Third Person” by Dan Borengasser, “Jumping In” by Seth Freeman, “Haggis and Hummus” by Jill Gittleman, “One Last Task” by Larry Hendricks, “Revolutions of Everyday Life” by John Kitchens, “Onesentence” by Jane Rossand “Dead Man’s Lunch” by Jesse Sensibar.
Bringing new plays to the stage, the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase (NAPS) is a collaboration between Northern Arizona University’s Creative Writing Program and Theatrikos Theater Company. Each year, NAPS hosts a 10-minute play contest, calling on Flagstaff area thespians to celebrate and showcase 7 winning 10-minute plays at the Doris Harper White Playhouse located in downtown Flagstaff.
