Since two Norwegian brothers, Ole and Pete Solberg, came to Flagstaff in 1915 and made their own skis from pinewood to deliver goods to snow-bound ranchers, Flagstaff has been a ski town. So now in this century, in an effort to introduce more people to outdoor winter recreation, Arizona Snowbowl is offering 560 free Learn to Ski and Snowboard packages in January during national Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month!
Fitting in with Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, Arizona Snowbowl is encouraging all to get outdoors, exercise and experience the fun of winter recreation. The ski resort is offering 10 free ski packages and 10 free snowboard packages daily for 28 days in January (excluding Jan. 1, 19 and 20). These packages – a $45,000 gift to the community – include rental equipment, a lift ticket and two-hour lesson.
“Humans were never meant to hibernate, so skiing and snowboarding offers family fun and fitness during the winter months while exploring nature,” said Arizona Snowbowl General Manager, J.R. Murray. “Flagstaff always has embraced a culture of skiing, so for those who have missed out, Arizona Snowbowl is offering a free, safe and fun opportunity to participate under the guidance of professional instructors!”
Arizona Snowbowl is the winner of three consecutive National Safety Awards for 2009, 2010 and 2011.
“We believe our emphasis on safety is one of the reasons Arizona Snowbowl continues to be recognized for its premier outdoor recreational experience,” said Arizona Snowbowl Ski Patrol Director B.J. Boyle. “During the Learn to Ski and Snowboard program, we’ll have the opportunity to promote safety to newcomers to the sport, while introducing them to a healthy activity that can be enjoyed for a lifetime!” fbn
