Spring is quickly approaching, which means outside becomes our main living space. It is important to choose the right decking for your home. There are different options out there, but doing your research is worth the time. You want your decking to withstand the weather, be durable and last you a lifetime.
When choosing a deck, you can choose between wood, plastic or composite. However, composite decks are the smart choice. A composite deck is one of the most popular alternative decking products. It will last longer than traditional wood and requires far less maintenance. Plastic decking can expand and contract in certain climates. This loosens the joints and makes the decks unstable. They can also get hot and radiate heat during the summer season. This leads us to composite decking.
Composite decking uses a combination of plastic and wood fibers. It is also mold and insect resistant. The deck boards are longer than other boards. You can get them up to 20 feet long, meaning fewer end joints. The decking can be attached to joists, so there are no visible screws, leaving you with a cleaner look. Composite decking is economically friendly. It contains recycled plastic shopping bags and milk jugs. As far as cleaning, composite decks can be easily cleaned using soap and water.
During your research, look at field results. This shows how the different manufacturers stand up against each other in the field. They test the products to see how well they perform, the durability and their resistance to water. The fewer field failures, the better; for example, MoistureShield has not had any field failures.
Research the warranties that different manufacturers offer. They vary on length of time, and some may have certain stipulations in the fine print. Check these guidelines prior to installation. Some manufactures offer them between 20-25 years, and MoistureShield is a lifetime limited warranty. You also want to research whether or not the warranty is transferrable in the event that you sell your home.
The reason MoistureShield hasn’t had any failed field results and offers a lifetime warranty is based off of their manufacturing process. They begin by mixing wood fibers together. Next, they mix together plastics. They have created and perfected a perfect solution of different types of plastic. Once the wood fibers and plastic solution are mixed together, the mixture is cooked at a high heat, almost to the point of combustion. Finally, the boards are cooled. MoistureShield has a long drying process. This allows the molecules time to settle into place. This process minimizes the likelihood of expansion and contraction. It’s important to remember that not all composite decking manufacturers have the same process. You need to do your research before choosing which one is best for you.
Once you choose the brand, the fun part begins. From here, you can pick what look you want your deck to have. Do you want a color or more of a wood look? What color wood? Do you want to add a design? What length do you need? What do you want to board to look like? With grooves or without? These are all important questions to ask yourself before you get started. Some websites have programs where you can design your own deck. This way, you can try out different looks and colors before buying.
Don’t forget to factor in the extras to finish off your deck. This includes the railings, treads and posts. This way everything matches and is in the same color (if you choose), material and texture. These finishing touches help your entire deck to come together and be the outdoor living space you’ve always envisioned. FBN
