In this workshop, students will gain the knowledge and understanding about installation art and begin to develop the tools, and skills necessary to design and create a place-based, site-specific installation.
Students will be invited to work with the artist Shawn Skabelund as he sets up five large-scale installations in the main gallery in the Coconino Center for the Arts. Students will be introduced to the history of conceptual art, where the roots of installation art are found. Together students will choose a specific interior or exterior space in which they will “collaborate,” and then through research they will come up with a concept in which to explore. Through this research students will then come up with a variety of materials to use in the creation of their installation. These materials will be the vehicles of symbolism for the concept that they will be exploring. Thus, the design of the installation will be generated from the research, selected space, and the chosen materials used to construct their work of art.
Cost for the Workshop:
$199 by August 15th | $229 by August 31
