While they are simple rules, it is critical that anyone handling a firearm knows and adheres to them all the time.
With an estimated 8.3 million new firearms owners in the last year, there are plenty of folks who could use some good advice from a trusted and experienced friend. You may also know someone who is “on the fence” about purchasing a firearm and they, too, would be great plus ones. This is the month to share your passion for the shooting sports with someone new!
Regardless of who you take, there are some fundamentals that must be shared with everyone. First and foremost is safety. There are four fundamental safety rules that must be followed all the time. It is your responsibility to know them and share them with new shooters. So, here is the list:
- Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.
- Know your target and what is behind it.
While they are simple rules, it is critical that anyone handling a firearm knows and adheres to them all the time.
If you choose to take your plus one to an established range, there likely will be a safety video that covers these rules and specific range rules. They also will have a range safety officer overseeing shooters to ensure the rules are followed.
If, like so many here in Northern Arizona, you choose to enjoy the great outdoors while practicing your firearms skills and introducing others to them, the rules still apply. You should start your introduction to shooting with a thorough briefing on the safety rules. This not only ensures the safety of all, it also helps new shooters feel more confident.
When introducing a new shooter to the sports, it works best if you take your time and walk them through a few important steps. First, as mentioned above, should be the safety rules. Then, you should cover the specifics of the firearm you’ll be shooting. The new shooter, at a minimum, must know how to verify the firearm is unloaded and the basic controls associated with it. Start by talking about the correct stance, grip and sight picture so they understand how to be best prepared for that exciting first shot. Dry firing (firing an unloaded gun) is often a great next step to build confidence. Finally, once the new shooter is informed and comfortable, have them fire a couple of rounds and then relax for a moment to discuss any questions they have.
Introducing new folks to shooting sports is a great way to build a friendship for life and a new shooting partner. Find your plus one and take them shooting soon. New shooters can win some great new gear by entering the “Gear Box Giveaway” at

And always remember, it’s your obligation to be a safe and responsible firearms owner. FBN
