Knowing the Raw Facts about Pets

August 8, 2021 By FBN

Dogs and cats didn’t evolve to eat cooked food, let alone highly processed ones. Their natural diet was raw meats, fruits, and vegetables.

You are pushing a cart through the supermarket, past the endless rows and aisles of food options. The great privilege of living in a first world economy comes with a downside, though: how do you decide what to eat? More importantly, what is healthy for you to eat? The endless barrage of new diet trends and fads is overwhelming. The endcaps of your local supermarket constantly being swapped out to follow the latest food trends are a constant reminder that you need to eat healthier – but can they be trusted?

It’s not easy to navigate this food problem for you and your family, and to make matters worse, what about your pet? They aren’t aware of all the latest trends and fads, and while you are struggling to figure out what is healthy for you, you probably haven’t even started down the rabbit hole of what is healthy for your pets. Let’s make this as simple as possible: what is one human food trend 99% of people seem to agree on? “You should eat as many whole, unprocessed foods as possible.”

Seems simple enough, and it turns out the logic of that trend holds especially true for your dogs and cats. Dogs and cats didn’t evolve to eat cooked food, let alone highly processed ones. Their natural diet was raw meats, fruits, and vegetables. Your pet’s digestive tract is nowhere near as long as a human’s, and because of this, a lot of the energy they burn daily comes from digesting their food. If their food is not something their biology is designed to break down, a lot of their energy and nutrition is wasted digesting rather than preforming immunity functions, maintaining skin and coat quality, or just having the energy to chase a ball in the park. At the end of the day, there are varying qualities and digestibility in the kibble you buy your pet, but it’s still highly processed and cooked food that your pet wasn’t designed to digest.

As more people are coming to realize this fact, the raw pet food category is exploding with brands and options for your pet, all with the same single focus in mind: creating a pet food that is easy for your pet to digest, and packed full of natural nutrients that haven’t been degraded by the cooking process. It turns out feeding your pet the best is easier than deciphering how to feed yourself the best. All you have to do is look for a gently cooked, freeze dried or raw diet for your dog or cat. FBN
