U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released its unemployment figures for the nation for the month of February. The January numbers showed 8.3 percent of Americans were out of work. The State of Arizona’s most recent figures are from December, and show 8.7 percent of our residents are unemployed. Coconino County’s rate was 8.5 percent, while Maricopa’s was at 7.7 percent, and Pima County was at 7.9 percent during that same month. Updated state statistics are due out in mid-March. CCC Receives GED and Caregivers Grant
The Arizona Department of Education awarded Coconino Community College (CCC) an $80,000 federal grant to improve basic literacy skills, earn a GED, and obtain a Caregivers' Certificate. CCC is one of four colleges in the state to secure the two year Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (IBEST) grant. At least 160 students are expected to benefit. Jobs Report Showing Signs of Growth
According to the latest Arizona Workforce Employment Report released last month, the percentage of unemployed Arizonans dropped from 9.3 percent in April to 9.1 percent in May – the third consecutive decrease since February, and one that brings Arizona’s unemployment in line with the rest of the nation’s.
