Before the latest survey from the Center for the Future of Arizona was released, I believed that we agree on important issues more often than not. I base this primarily on conversations I’ve had with people who hold myriad political opinions about candidates and so-called partisan issues, but with whom I’ve found agreement on many of the problems we humans face. The center recently released their Arizona Voters’ Agenda (AVA) based on a statistically relevant survey of Arizona voters – results of … [Read more...] about Promoting Problem-Solving, Looking to the Arizona Voters’ Agenda

Financial Experience That Delivers for Flagstaff Citizens
Hello, my name is Stephen (Steve) Puhr. I am a registered Independent and am running as a write-in candidate for Flagstaff City Council. The recent decision approved by Council demonstrates a need for someone with my experience and ability. On April 19, 2024, the Draft report on the Water Rate Study was released. Since this report was issued after the deadline for nominating petitions to run for Council and I was disappointed how the rate case was handled, I decided to run as a write-in. I … [Read more...] about Financial Experience That Delivers for Flagstaff Citizens
Flagstaff Snow Removal Impacted by Crew Shortages
While this year has not been anything like last year’s “Snowmageddon,” in early February, two feet of snow fell on Flagstaff in one day, and that was on top of around a foot-and-a-half of fresh powder that had fallen the day before. With an average annual snowfall in the Flagstaff area of 108.8 inches and a great deal of unpredictability from year to year, it’s often a tall order for those responsible for snow removal to keep up. The Streets Section of the City of Flagstaff’s Public Works … [Read more...] about Flagstaff Snow Removal Impacted by Crew Shortages

Ex-Cop Urges All to Act Now on the Life They Want
After years of serving as a sheriff’s deputy, police patrol officer and SWAT team member, Julie Jones has given a lot of thought to lives that ended early, dreams that never got started and destinies left unfulfilled. “It was really heartbreaking to deliver death notifications to the loved ones of the deceased,” she told a packed conference room of businesspeople in Phoenix last April. “There are no guarantees in life. There is no promise of tomorrow.” Despite witnessing life’s tragedies, … [Read more...] about Ex-Cop Urges All to Act Now on the Life They Want

A comfortable office chair now has a new occupant on the second floor at Flagstaff City Hall downtown. As of May 30, Joanne Keene has been filling that chair and its accompanying desk in her new post as deputy city manager. She also is enjoying commanding views from her office windows of the San Francisco Peaks, an exchange for a view of the red rocks of Sedona, as she has left her most recent job as deputy city manager for the City of Sedona. Mentoring Through Quad Cities ATHENA Leadership Awards
The Quad Cities ATHENA Leadership Awards not only celebrate, recognize and honor women for their leadership skills, career achievements, community service and mentorship, they also promote what leadership looks like. ATHENA recipients say this is powerful because younger or less experienced women in the workplace can identify local role models they can talk to, observe in action and learn from. “Leaders become mentors for others and impact future growth,” said 2022 ATHENA recipient executive … [Read more...] about Mentoring Through Quad Cities ATHENA Leadership Awards

Asking Voters to Decide
Council salaries are on the table for discussion right now. The proposal would increase councilmember salaries from $25,500 to $63,800 in just two years. Mayor pay would increase from $38,500 to $70,180 in the same timeframe. Personally, I believe an increase of this magnitude should not be decided by Flagstaff City Council. In any regular job, you have to go to your boss to ask for a raise. The people are the boss, and I believe that this should go to the voters for a decision. Thankfully, we … [Read more...] about Asking Voters to Decide
